Safety on natural ice

A cold day or visible tracks do not prove that natural ice is safe. Knowledge, company, rescue skills and current local conditions are essential. Read the guidance from the Swedish Ice Safety Council before planning a trip.

A static page cannot assess today's ice

Natural ice changes with temperature, wind, snow, flowing water and local conditions. Knowledgeable people with suitable tools must assess it on site and continuously.

Issäkerhetsrådet recommends companions, ice-testing poles, ice claws, accessible rescue lines, flotation aids, waterproofed spare clothing and a waterproofed phone. Learn to use equipment before you need it.

Basic principles

  • Never skate alone: Companions are needed to help if someone falls through.
  • Check the ice: Use an ice pole or suitable tool and watch particularly for weak areas.
  • Carry complete equipment: Keep kit accessible and use a correctly fitting flotation aid.
  • Learn from experienced people: Club-led tours and courses are a better start than learning alone.
